It is with equal amounts of pleasure and pride that I welcome you to the Ophthalmic Photographers’
Society’s (OPS) 39th Annual Educational Program in Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta is known as the
“Gateway City to the South” and to some as the “Heart of the Old Confederacy”. I hope you will join
us in Atlanta and find some “heart” for Ophthalmic Imaging.
Each year we strive to offer something for everyone and I trust you will find many things of interest
this year. This annual program offers over one hundred lecture and workshop hours with many of your
favorite topics and speakers. We’ve also added several new lecturers that I hope you will welcome into
the OPS family.
Ophthalmic imaging manifests itself in many ways and we should not forget the importance of
technologies like ultrasound, specular photomicrography, and slit lamp imaging. Keep a lookout for
new programs on OCT imaging, adaptive optics, and different ways to utilize auto-fluorescence in your
practice. There will be discussions on new developments in vision research, clinical trials on retinal
degeneration and bionic eyes.
The OPS has many friends, not the least of which are the numerous vendors that provide us with the
equipment needed to offer scores of exciting “hands-on” workshops. Fundus Cameras, Photo Slit
Lamps, many varieties of OCT’s, SLOs, and for the first time a RetCam will all be available to you,
thanks to the continued, generous support of the vendors.
In addition to the educational venues, this program will include many other items of great importance.
The OPS is a great organization that is administered by volunteers, and you can volunteer too. Working
as a room monitor is a great way to get to know your fellow OPS members. As you become seasoned
as a photographer, you can volunteer to help instruct in workshops. With both of these opportunities
you can earn CE credits. It is always a good idea to keep yourself in the loop and the way to the “OPS
loop” is to attend the Annual Business Meeting on Sunday at 12 noon, which is open to all OPS
members.
As always, some of the highlights of the meeting are the “Scientific Session” and the “4th Annual J
Donald M. Gass M.D. Memorial Lecture”. Both will be offered on Friday afternoon. Each year, we
strive to invite like-minded pioneers in their field to speak in honor of Dr. Gass. This year, please join
us in welcoming Dr. Cynthia Toth as lecturer.
It’s not all hard work; we also have some great events planned for play! I highly recommend the
“Welcome Reception” with the very entertaining raffle benefiting the Johnny Justice Jr. Scholarship
Fund on Friday evening. And if you miss the chance to visit the AAO exhibit floor to see the winners
of this year’s OPS Scientific Exhibit, you can catch the slide show at the OPS Banquet on Sunday
night.
Come to join, learn and laugh. See you in Atlanta!
